Br. Cuthbert signs his vows. The new habit lies on the altar
On the Feast of St. Benedict, Wednesday, March 21, 2007, Br. Cuthbert Donehue made his junior
profession at a special 11:00 am Eucharist. According to custom, at the offertory Br. Cuthbert read
his handwritten vows aloud and then signed them on the altar. Abbot Andrew accepted them and
added his own signature. Br. Cuthbert was then divested of his novice habit and clothed in the
habit of a junior monk. These junior (or temporary) vows of obedience, stability, and conversion
to monastic life as lived at St. Gregory's Abbey are for a term of three years, and come after an
initial postulancy of six months and a novitiate of two years. After the Eucharist, the community
and forty guests celebrated the profession with a special lunch in the monastic refectory. Br.
Cuthbert's mother and several friends were amongst the guests gathered for the profession. Br.
Cuthbert, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, has a bachelor's degree in history from the
University of South Carolina and a master's degree in theological research from the University of
Durham in England. He worked as an assistant director for Camp Gravatt in the Diocese of South
Carolina in 2002 and 2003, and lived in Hull, England during part of 2003 where he did volunteer
work for the church in Sutton and Wawne.
